Extended Essay: A Complete Guide

The Extended Essay (EE) is a 4,000-word independent research project. It\'s one of the three core components of the IB Diploma and prepares you for university-level research.

The EE Process: 6 Steps to Success

1

Choose Your Subject

Select an IB DP subject you're studying. Ideally one you enjoy and have good grades in.

2

Select a Research Question

Develop a focused, clear question that can be answered within 4,000 words. Should be specific but allow for analysis.

3

Find a Supervisor

Work with a teacher in your chosen subject. They will guide you through the process and provide feedback.

4

Research and Plan

Conduct thorough research using reliable sources. Plan your essay structure and argument flow.

5

Draft and Revise

Write multiple drafts based on supervisor feedback. Focus on analysis, critical thinking, and academic rigor.

6

Choosing a Good Research Question

  • Specific: "How does temperature affect the rate of enzyme-catalyzed reactions?" (Good)
  • Too broad: "What are enzymes?" (Too vague)
  • Debatable: Allows for analysis and argument, not just description
  • Manageable: Can be researched with available resources within time constraints

⚠️ Common EE Mistakes to Avoid

  • • Choosing a topic too broad or too narrow
  • • Waiting too long to start - begin in junior year!
  • • Not meeting regularly with your supervisor
  • • Ignoring the word limit (4,000 words max)
  • • Poor time management leading to rushed work
  • • Failing to reflect on the research process
