IB pressure is real, but burnout is not inevitable. Learning to manage stress is as important as learning your subjects—in fact, it will improve your academic performance.
Recognizing Burnout
- Constant fatigue despite rest
- Loss of motivation or interest in subjects you once enjoyed
- Irritability or withdrawal from friends and family
- Declining grades despite increased effort
Evidence-Based Stress Management
- Sleep: Aim for 7-9 hours consistently. All-nighters hurt performance more than they help.
- Exercise: Even 20 minutes of walking releases endorphins and improves focus.
- Mindfulness: Apps like Headspace or simple breathing exercises can reduce anxiety.
- Social connection: Talk to someone—a friend, parent, teacher, or counselor.
Tip: Schedule "non-negotiable" downtime just like you schedule study sessions. Your brain needs rest to consolidate learning.
